Center for the Advancement of Research & Development in Educational Technology (CARDET) – is the leading research and development centre in the Mediterranean region with global expertise in education, digital skills, capacity building and working with adults. As the largest independent non-profit centre based in Cyprus, CARDET is independently affiliated with universities and institutions from around the world, such as Yale University, the University of Nicosia and the International Council of Educational Media. CARDET has completed more than 500 initiatives and projects relating to adult education, capacity building, digital transformation etc. and implemented projects in more than 45 countries, supported by the European Commission, the United Nations Development Program, Microsoft, Google, international agencies and governments around the world. Members of its team, board of directors, and advisory board have served in high-profile positions for organisations like UNESCO, Commonwealth of Learning, OECD, Google, and the American Educational Research Association. CARDET is an Associate member of EAEA, a full member of ALL Digital, a formal member of the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition and the ambassador and the focal point for EPALE in Cyprus. CARDET has strategic collaborations in Cyprus and the region, like the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, Cyprus Chamber of Commerce, local adult education providers, schools, VETs, and higher education, and representative groups from industry, business, and civil society.
CARDET has led or collaborated with a variety of initiatives at the core of the RALExILA topics. These include the development of the Cyprus Lifelong Learning Strategy 2021-2027, in partnership with EAEA and collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, actions supporting the professional development of Adult education providers to improve and extend the supply of high-quality learning opportunities tailored to the needs of low-skilled/ low qualified individuals (project DIMA 2.0), initiatives focusing on low-skilled adults inclusion in the labour market (OVERCOME) and on boosting adults career management skills and competences (AGEFACTOR) and the capacity of guidance practitioners to provide custom services to support them (QUALIFY). Furthermore, CARDET is currently collaborating with EAEA on an initiative aimed to support partnerships and stakeholder engagement for Upskilling Pathways (PARTNERUP). Finally, CARDET coordinated the project ADULTDIGITALUP which aimed to support the Cypriot authorities to improve the digital literacy of adults in Cyprus with a particular focus on adult educators and low-skilled adults. The project was implemented by the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, supported by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM) and coordinated by CARDET.
CARDET will lead the work package of carrying out piloting activities in 4 countries, expanding the prototype of the RALExILA frameworks and models, and evaluating and refining it with national project participants. CARDET will also contribute to all project activities, including promoting the project to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, Ministry of Labour, Cyprus Human Resources Development Authority, adult Educators and adults learners (specifically those of lower skills – facing unemployment). CARDET will also communicate and disseminate widely the project via its local and internal networks comprising more than 1000 organizations across Europe and beyond.
Xanthia Aristidou, PhD
Senior Researcher/ Project Manager
Dr. Xanthia Aristidou is a Senior Researcher and a Project Manager at CARDET, bringing a wealth of expertise to the team. She holds a PhD in Sociology of Education from King’s College London and an MA in Pedagogical Sciences from the University of Cyprus. Dr. Aristidou has many years of experience training teachers and adult educators as an expert adult educator. Her extensive experience in adult education spans several years, during which she held part-time lecturer positions at the European University of Cyprus. Dr. Aristidou is actively organising and delivering training for various adult education projects. She coordinates several projects on behalf of CARDET, including PartnerUP: Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement for Upskilling Pathways and Just4All: Adult Education for a Just Transition.
